IRVINE, CALIF. — Morinaga America, Inc. and its holding company, Morinaga & Co., Ltd., are constructing a new manufacturing facility in Mebane, NC.
Morinaga plans to invest more than $130 million towards the 132,633-square-foot site, which will significantly increase the company’s production capacity for Hi-Chew branded confections. Construction is scheduled to begin in October of this year, and the facility is expected to be opened in the beginning of 2027. Morinaga said the plant will create over 200 production, quality assurance, maintenance and support positions.
“Hi-Chew has been steadfast in growing its market share in the US non-chocolate candy category and has achieved 20% year-over-year growth since 2018,” said Teruhiro Kawabe, president and chief executive officer of Morinaga America, Inc. “With this tremendous brand growth year over year, we are eager to maximize our production output to continue providing new, innovative Hi-Chew products to consumers and brand fans nationwide.”
Morinaga opened its first US manufacturing facility in North Carolina in 2015. The site currently produces more than two billion pieces of Hi-Chew annually, and the company expects to produce hundreds of tonnes of the candy once both plants are operational.
